I would recommend that you start growing outdoors first until you develop a good feel for the needs and growth cycle of the plant. Start by germinating your seeds. This can be done in ways. You could start them in a damp towel in a warm dark place, or you could let the seeds come up naturally in a pot of rich loose soil. Once the seeds have sprouted, you should put them in a container, or a pre dug hole that has been enriched and conditioned with quality soil additives.
Growing is not really complicated, unless you strive to produce the best possible healthy plants. It can be rather time consuming and somewhat expensive though. I recomend your first investment be a grow guide by either Jorge Cervantes or Ed Rosenthal. I will answer any questions, and elaborate on things if you want me to, but in order to really cover the topic correctly it will take a lot of board space, and I want to make sure people are interested. Post or P.M me if interested, or post any questions you have here.

Well actually kindbudsmoker told me about this....
DWC Hydro (deep water cultivation) is probably the easiest for beginers but its costly and you have to have your own house or a VERY secrative operation. Check Overgrow.com
It grows very rapidly and poduces nice yeilds on your plants.

Your partially right Covert.....DWC is easy and yields well, but it is really cheap to setup......
You can buy pump, fans and a rubbermaid for less than $20....and all you need to add is a light, which is where the $$$ comes into play...The more you invest in your light the more bud you're going to have (in general)......
I've used DWC in a 15 gallon rubbermaid for 2 years and have never had a reason to switch methods....It just works too well for my setup (I grow 3-5 plants to about 4 feet tall with lots of training and tying)....If you wanted, say 50 plants, DWC would just be a pain in the balls........

Oh and in response to the original question, there is no best way to grow weed.....There are many different ways and all can produce amazing results...... Check out www.overgrow.com/growfaq/ and do a little reading there....Start with the "Getting Started" section... --KBS

Hrm...how successful (and how likely to be caught) would one be if one were to just plant a few seeds in the ground in the woods somewhere, or in some old abandoned place's back yard, or some similar location? I think it'd be pretty nice to grow pot, but there are several factors keeping me from doing it at home.

I would recommend that you should start any plants indoors. Once they are about a half foot tall they should survive outside.
But planting seeds in the ground outside i serioulsy doubt they would sprout, unless you prepared for them very well and took extra good care of them.

You could easily have a successful outdoor grow on property that isn't yours such as public lands. For the majority of public land grows, police don't expend the effort, finances , and time to try and catch the culprit. They are more interested in the photo, or press opportunities that any siezure makes. Please only grow on public or isolated lands where the land owner is absentee. Forefiture laws allow the DA to sieze property where drug crimes happen.
Also, keep in mind that marijuana needs intense sunlight. Growing in the woods will cause the sunlight to be blocked and filtered by tree canopies, and taller undergrowth. This leads to small whispy plants, with low yeilds that flower prematurely.

How much can one harvest from the average plant? I've looked for this on Erowid, and couldn't find it for some reason.

Thats a tricky question because of the sheer number of varieties and hybrids. I would have to say that someone who is an efficient gardener could yeild up to a pound off of the average plant. Some plants produce as little as 10 to 20 grams, while some can produce two or more kilos.

Just wire some tomatoes to the plants when they grow tall enough and no one will notcie. Call them hybrid tomato plants.. as cannabis looks very similar to tomato plants .

Ive heard when it is in full budding it produces around 4ozs a month, if you keep picking it, but NOT cutting the main part of the plant and hanging it.

Ive heard when it is in full budding it produces around 4ozs a month, if you keep picking it, but NOT cutting the main part of the plant and hanging it. Not true. Marijuana is an annual. This means that the plant flowers and seeds once a year. Once the flowering cycle has completed the plants life cycle is complete, and it dies. However you can regenerate a marijuana plant by leaving some foliage on the plant after harvesting the flowers. Place the plant under a 18-6 or 24 hour continuous light cycle, and the majority of the time the plant will regenerate itself.
