Black Box, Blue Box, White Box...I've heard of many different -boxes used in phone phreaking. However, I'm not sure about what all of them do, and what the current status of their viability is. Is anyone in possession of a file or link detailing all of these boxes?

The anarchist's cookbook also has stuff on the various boxes including the beige box. basically what they all do is produce their own dial tones, so you can make free phone calls . You have to figure out how to first properly record the tones. Each of the boxes i variant in sophistication, and some of them cannot be used anymore. I believe the blue box is obsolete.

Well, I know the basic idea behind them, and I know how some of them work. The question is now, do I trust the Anarchist's Cookbook, or some website called "hack4r.com?"

Trust hack3r.com. Most of the stuff in the anarchist's cookbook is suicide anyway.

Yes really, but try telling that to all the preteens that want to learn how to make bombs.

Everyone does that . Actually it might be better to tell them that the anarchist's cookbook is better than hack3r. If they are dumb enough, they will believe it and learn their lesson.

Yeah go by the files i posted from Hack3r, but alot of box designs simply don't work anymore.
Boxing is nearly a thing of the past with the current line and switchboard technology.
Payphone vulnerabilities are common for free calls.

.Have most of these boxes become obsolete, or just a few?. I also wonder how you could take advantage of payphone vulnerabilities without anyone noticing

A few boxes still work, however it just depends on the phone network which people are trying to use it on.
As for the payphone vulnerabilities that nobody notices, one is "people" open up the wiring loom leading to the base of the payphone. Stripping the insulation off the 2 wires used for call operation. They normally do it underneath the phone where it isn't seen.
Then they use a compact home phone, cut the plug off and attach 2 aligator clips to the call wires. Then cliping the normal phone on to the payphones wires, thus bypassing the coin/payphone system.

Wow, it seems like however, it would leave more inciminating evidence than if you used one of the various boxes to produce your own dial tones. I mean, you would expect the phone company comes by the phones every now and then and checks to see if anyone has been tampering with them.
