The following is the first chapter to my book. I am by no means a writer so it may be terrible; if it is tell me. I accept any and all feedback on this.
Elijah Harris use to be different. He got good grades in school; He was polite at home; He never wavered from the straight and narrow path, he never questioned authority, he never talked back, tried drugs or mixed with the wrong people.
But then something happened that changed his view of the world. Something happened to Elijah that gave him a permanent “Fuck the world” attitude. Something happened and it took his life and flipped that bitch upside down on the poor kid. You’ll find out just what happened soon enough, but for now you need to know the events leading up to that event.
The story starts at Elijah’s mom’s house in Independence, Missouri…
“What game do you want to play?” Said Elijah
“I don’t really care, what do you want to play?” Said Josh
“I don’t care either, you chose” Elijah said.
“Uhh…No Mercy?” Josh Said.
“Sure” Said Elijah.
Elijah stood up from his futon bed and walked across his room to the T.V; where he crouched down on one knee. He found No Mercy; blew into the open end of the cartridge; shoved it into the N64 and turned on the T.V.
“I CALL FIRST PLAYER!” Josh said, lunging for the first controller. Elijah grabbed it first and held it out of reach.
“Fuck you, I turned it on- I get first player” He said, laughing.
“Whatever, I’m still gonna’ beat your ass”
“You wish.”
After a few wrestling matches on the N64 (Josh and Elijah both won two times). Elijah and Josh gave up the N64 for a while. Elijah was surprised how well he and Josh got along. Usually when he had a friend over it was awkward and the conversations led nowhere. But talking to Josh he felt like he was actually talking about something. You could call it “Instant trust” a certain feeling of “good friendship”.
Elijah and Josh headed to the kitchen for something to drink. Elijah’s kitchen wasn’t as big or clean as most of the rooms in his house. There were crumbs on the floor and the counters where overcrowded. The white tile on the floor only made it look worse and the trashcan was overflowing; almost as if a game of jengra was taking place with empty food containers.
“What do you have?” Said Josh as he put his hand on the refrigerator door and paused to listen to Elijah’s answer.
“Umm, I think we have milk, orange juice, pop and kool-aid”
“What kind of pop?”
“Coke”
“Diet or Regular?”
“Mutha’ fucka’ are you the devil? Open the damn refrigerator!”
They both laughed and opened the refrigerator door. There were a few stains where drinks had spilled inside, but nothing too bad. It turned out that there was no pop, so they both decided to have ice water instead. They stood at the counter for a few minutes having a very animated conversation about girls, when Elijah suddenly remembered something.
“Do you want to get on the internet? We just got road runner.”
“Sure. Man, you fuckin’ suck I’ve got AOL.”
Josh followed Elijah through the unusually tidy living room and up the narrow staircase. They turned left into Elijah’s room and Josh stopped at the door.
“Did you hear about that kid who blew himself up?” Asked Josh.
“Where at?” Said Elijah
Josh shrugged his shoulders and ran his hand through his short brown hair.
“I’m not sure; it was on the news. He was trying to make a bomb and it blew up on him”
“Whoa. How old was he?” Elijah asked.
“I don’t know-like twelve” Josh said.
Elijah laughed. “I just don’t understand how people can be that stupid. Why in the hell would you try and make a bomb? I would have at least researched it a little before I went tossing gun powder around.”
Josh’s eyes widened a little; showing his interest in what Elijah had just said.
“I know! His parents were on there talking about how he was the greatest kid you’d ever meet and the people who ran the site he got the instructions from should be punished and shit. She completely ignored the possibility that her son’s death was caused by anything but the owners of the site!”
Elijah laughed again as they reached his room. They crossed the beige shag carpet and Elijah sat down on the corner of his bed; Josh sat down in the computer chair and turned the computer on. Elijah was curious now…
“That’s pretty fucked up. Did they say what site he got if from?” Elijah asked.
“They didn’t say what site because you know tons of people would go there, but I know a site where you can get information like that from. It’s an old school BBS with a lot of text files people have submitted on how to do stuff. I’m usually in the forum but I read some of the text files to.”
“What’s the address?”
Josh opened his mouth a little and looked at the ceiling as if the answer was written there. A few seconds passed and Josh finally looked back down at Elijah and grinned.
"Oh yeah " He said
“Totse dot com”
It is just the rough draft of what the first chapter will look like; and I only went through once writing it as I went along. I hope you enjoyed it, if you read it.
