Anyone in here ever play Legend of the Red Dragon, it's an old BBS RPG, a most cool old school game of tactics, logic and a bit of bastardism thrown in!

I have never played it, let alone heard of it. What was it about?

I copied this info. from the site where I play it (http://lord.nuklear.org). This site hosts a red realm and a blue realm, red = Serious, full rules must be practiced and blue = Basically no real rules, lots of cheating, backstabbing etc. I play in the red realm 'cause I'm from the old school. Legend Of the Red Dragon is a very old game. It began some time in the early-1990s. LORD was a "door" (an online game) for dial-up Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). At that time, the Internet was still mostly out of the public's reach, being limited to universities and government institutions. The BBS was the only route to the On-Line world. To enter a BBS system one would open up their favorite terminal emulator, such as Procomm Plus, Telix, and others. They would be in direct communication with their modem, and would enter commands such as "ATDT" to dial, and "ATH" to hang up. This would dial out the BBS's phone number. Once connected to a BBS, they would log in, and be presented with menus made of colored text characters. The BBS would have many areas available such as File downloads, Message boards, Voting systems, Textfile viewing, Text (ANSI) Art galleries, and most importantly, the Doors (online games) section. LORD was written by a man named Seth Able Robinson. Seth created LORD in order to provide his BBS users something that they could look forward to doing on the BBS once a day. Hence, this game is intended to be played day after day. It is impossible to win the game in one sitting. This has created for some people, a kind of "addiction" where they can't wait to play again when a new day begins at midnight. Unfortunately, the fun and games ended along with the BBS scene in the late 1990s when nearly all BBS users migrated to the far-more-connected Internet. Nuklear LORD is here to bring back the fun of playing LORD on a dial-up BBS system. It was intended to appear exactly as LORD did in the BBS days, except they do it without a BBS. LORD is similar to Dungeons and Dragons, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, etc. LORD is unique in that it is multiplayer, and is meant to be played once or possibly twice in a day. Each day at midnight, every player is given a certain amount of forest fights and player fights. Players collect gold and experience by fighting monsters in the forest, and other human players. The gold can be used to purchase new weapons/armor, to make your player more powerful. As experience accumulates, you will be allowed to fight your level's Master in order to advance to the next level. Players continue to gain levels until they reach Level 12, where they are able to fight the Red Dragon. To search for the dragon, players must press "S" in the forest. The highest honor in the game is given to the one who kills the dragon. If you kill the dragon, your character is reset to the beginning, but you keep your class skills (see below). After five dragon kills, you become the supreme hero, and the game - along with all players - start from the beginning. Class skills are special abilities you have depending on the class that you chose when you created your character. There are the Death Knights, the Mystical Wizards, and the Thieves - each with different special skills. These skills can be accessed during a fight (hit D for deathknight, M for mystical, T for thief). The Death Knights get very powerful attack skills. Mystical class warriors get various different abilities such as a healing spell, a run-away spell, attacks, and others. Thieves get moderately powerful attack skills, but gain them quicker than the Death Knights do.

Yeah, a MUD! I had totally forgotten that term, I used to play LORD but lost it about '95. I found it again not so long ago, and all these old terms and memories start coming back. ;D

Multi-User Domain (or Dungeon). You probably haven't heard of them because they're extremely "old-school." IIRC, the first MUD, simply called MUD, was created by...those two guys whose names I can't remember at that one university...in 1978. Basically, it's Everquest without graphics. Rather, Everquest (and other MMORPGs) are MUDs with graphics. Exactly how a MUD works is hard to explain. Google it, mebbe. Or check out www.medievia.com ...that's my personal favorite MUD.
