I recieved a phone number from a friend in the not too distant past. It was rumored that this number was used by state LEO's to assure that any phone they used had a secured line. The number was a local one, and completely normal. That is until you dialed it. The line would ring once, then cease. Then a pitch sweep would start sweeping from low to high then back gradually. I was told that if you heard a distortion at the low end of the sweep, it meant that your number was being monitored. I dialed this number on several phones, and some had the distortion and some did not. My question is this: Has anyone actually heard of a system that detects taps in this manner, and if not, what the hell could this number have been?

They are not giving specific personal information so I see no reason to edit this. Just don't get any more specific.

OTOH, just 'cause yer paranoid doesn't mean they ain't out to get ya.

But when you know they are out to get you, you don’t have to worry about it any more.

You won't be paranoid about phone taps once the cops make up some excuse to put you in jail. Theb you'll be paranoid about Bruno, the transvestite cellmate who axed his parents to death.
