PLANTAE SCAM
BY: DIzzIE [c]opyleft2003
Introduction
This ‘scam’ involves the free (or cheap) attainment of various plantae (be it cacti, trees, flowers, etc.) and the resale of said plantae to acquire a monetary profit . The rest of this brief outline will discuss methods of obtainment as well as venues/opportunities for selling the plants.
Obtainment
*Various organizations give away free (or absurdly cheap) plants. A prime example is the National Arbor Day Foundation. To receive 10 young trees by mail (postage-paid) send $10, along with your address, to
10 Trees for Wildlife
The National Arbor Day Foundation
100 Arbor Avenue
Nebraska City, NE 68410
or visit the website: www.arborday.org/join/index.html
(numerous other ‘free plant’ giveaways can be found by conducting a simple search on Google, another example being www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/t_std2.asp?PID=41 )
*Parks/ Public Displays. When visiting parks, forests, or general public displays, feel free to excavate particularly attractive flowers/cacti. Read plant care books to learn of proper storage/uprooting techniques (keep the roots damp with moist paper towels, store the plants in a cool part of the house, etc…). What is particularly beneficial about parks and nature trails is they often have the name of the plant inscribed on a plaque right next to the plant. Other public displays of flowers of interest include amusement parks, ceremonies, etc.
*Outdoor flower shops. The simple shoplifting technique of one person distracting the shop/cart employee, while the second walks off casually with a plant is applied in this method.
* Private Residences. Various plants may also be taken from back/front yards that are particularly plant-friendly. When using this method, one may also be interested in collecting holiday wreaths from doorways. POTS
Selling
Before one can sell the plants, it follows that one must be familiar with their retail value. The prices that one should sell the plants for can thus be determined by: visiting plant stores and noting their prices or browsing online retailers (such as www.nextag.com/Plants___Trees~2700028z15z3oz3ozmainz5-htm and other websites found by, once again, conducting a quick search on Google). Once base prices have been established, we one may proceed to selling the merchandise.
*Ebay. The digital outlet for nearly all goods, it is no surprise that Ebay has an active Home & Garden section ( pages.ebay.com/catindex/catgardening.html?ssPageName=MOPS5:HHM06 ).
*Flyers. Putting up flyers at the local community centre/grocery store thumbtack board/lamp posts/etc. advertising the plants/prices and a location and time of sale (or if you prefer, a phone number).
*Swapmeet. In case the prospect of setting up a solo garage sale is too daunting, simply sell your plants at an organized swapmeet.
*Friends. One may be surprised how many friends (particularly those that are married) are interested in buying cheap plants to decorate their home/patio, just ask around.
*Other Resources. Finally, go back to Google and conduct a third search, this time on ‘selling plants’ and you may be pleased with the found results, such as this great website, www.thekrib.com/Plants/selling.html which has several first hand accounts of selling plants to local fish stores…
Additional Notes
*Keep in mind that the selling venues are directly dependent on the methods used in the actual obtainment of the plants (for instance, plants obtained through the Arbor Day Foundation can be sold much more freely than plants taken from a park [naturally common sense dictates that the park should not be down the street, or in the same city…]).
* A brief notes on soil and pots: once again, the requirement of soil and pots will depend on your chosen mode of selling the plants…Soil may of course be obtained nearly anywhere, and pots may be obtained from gardening sheds/yards.
Enjoy!
