Is there any chems that can used as a substitute for toluene? A person has been trying some synths for psuedoephedrine HCl to methcathinone and/or methamphetamines but is having trouble obtaining toluene for cleaning of waxes etc, and ends up with a semi dry crystal that is H2O soluble but on a burn test leaves burnt black residue which apparently shouldn't happen.

Well, I'm not exactly sure about the drug stuff, but i know that Xylene AKA Xylol is used instead of toluene in TNT to make TNX. Xylol is supposedly VERY similar to toluene but i wouldnt use it inplace of toluene to make any kind of compound that would be ingested or taken into your body.

Thanks, actually Xylene rings a bell now that you mention it. I'm sure I've seen it some recipe somewhere. Xylene used to be in Nikko/marker pens or something wasn't it?

Do a melting point test on your product. Put a small sample in a capillary tube, and heat it up while keeping track of the temperature. Mark when it begins to melt and when it's completely molten. The difference between the two is the melting point range. If it's less than two degrees Celcius and is pretty close to the melting point of your desired compound, it should be of acceptable purity.
Both methamphetamine and methcathinone should burn with a sooty flame, leaving a black residue. All aromatic compounds (they're aromatic) will do so.

Xylene was used in marker pens, but recently has been snuffed out so that marketers can put 'xylene free' on their products.
You are unlikely to find pure toluene or xylene. Usually, the thinners available these days are a mixture of toluene and xylene, or something else alltogether, such as dichloromethane.

yeah, toluene and xylene fucked off really...you can still find them in some industrial paint and paint thinners, but they are always found in multiple sclerosis, as brain solvents. basically they accumulate inside your brain, which lets parasites in etc. so they were removed, and its pretty hard to them.

Someone has found a chem. company in Australia called "Diggers" that distribute many things like metho, turps etc. Low and behold, they sell pure toluene in 1L, 3L and 10L quantities!

I've bought toluene by the gallon from hardware stores before. Same with xylene.
