Yes gasoline is only flammable when its in its gaseous state. The liquid itself isnt flammable. Throw a lit match in a cup of gasoline, the gasoline vapors will catch on fire and burn until there is no more vapor left to be consumed.
stay on topic! jesus fucking christ... One more flame and this topic will become worm fodder. IF you just HAVE to flame the fuck out of each other go do it in the god damn FLAME LOUNGE! THAT'S WHAT IT'S THERE FOR!

Fine. It will explode in a small space with access to oxygen. That can have multiple meanings. Just drop it already. Yes, zbox, gasoline as a liquid is not flammable, only its fumes are.

Is gasoline the same as petrol? Here we use petrol in cars and I know that is most definitely flammable when in liquid form.

Yup. Gasoline is the same thing as petrol if i'm not mistaken. The vapors and gasses that form when gasoline or petrol evaporates is flammable. The actual liquid itself isn't flammable.

I know for a fact that the petrol here is flammable as a liquid.

I know for a fact that the petrol here is flammable as a liquid. No, it's not, but the liquid is volatile and turns into a gas very rapidly, and the gaseous gasoline burning above the liquid makes the liquid appear to be on fire.

The liquid is flammable, it's just not explosive. The vapors are explosive.

The liquid is flammable, it's just not explosive. The vapors are explosive. The liquid is NOT flammable in a liquid state. The vapors, however, ARE flammable when in the presence of oxygen. Explosivity is relative, gasoline fume explosions only happen when confined (e.g. in the cylinder of a car engine).

well, if youve got the balls or if youre bored enough, go put a small bit of gasoline on your hand and catch it on fire. wave your hand around slowly and youll see that its the vapors and not the liquid that is on fire.
a smarter and safer way would be to pour some rubbing alcohol on the ground and light that on fire get down really low, like level with the ground and youll see that the liquid itself is not on fire but the flame starts juuuuuuuuuuuust above the liquid.
there are fuels called gasohol which is a mixture of gasoline and alcohol.
gasoline burns in the same way that alcohol does, and that means that the liquid evaporates and the vapors are flammable.
throw a lit match into a small can of gasoline. if the liquid itself was flammable the entire can would immediately explode in a large fireball. you know what rally happens when you throw a lit match into a cup of gasoline? the LIQUID gasoline puts the match out and the vapors ABOVE the gasoline catch on fire

well, if youve got the balls or if youre bored enough, go put a small bit of gasoline on your hand and catch it on fire. wave your hand around slowly and youll see that its the vapors and not the liquid that is on fire. Now that you mention this, enter stupid theory time. [idiocy] When i was about 12-13 i had a tissue soaked in Methylated Spirits (nearly %100 alcohol) and lit it. When it burned i noticed a lovely blue flame. But the major break through was that the tissue didn't burn, it remained completely white. So me thinks, Hey if i cup my hand and fill it full of Metho, i can light it and have pretty blue flames coming off my hand and not get burnt, right? Wrong! As soon as i lit the shit oh how wrong i was. Yes it fucking burnt, i ran through the house and slammed my hand in the toilet. Hey it's quicker then turning a tap on when your on fire. [/idiocy] So, please don't try this at home. Thankfully i healed and theres no lasting result of my stupidness. But yes it is just the gasses that burn, not the liquid. I just had no concept of heat dissipation at the time. ;D Signed... T. Wedd

I used to do this with cologne... and it looks cool. You just need a little, and the flame shouldn't last long enough for it to burn you... unless you have your hands cupped and full of the shit!
