I know alot of teenage kids will say this book is boring.....but if you look past the text and find the metaphors and symbols its very enjoyable....
I was in the exact situation he was in when i read the book and it helped me alot.....this is my favorite great american novel by far.....
Im not going to post a summary because we have all read it but i want to hear your thoughts

Catcher in the rye to me was a great book. It wasn't one of my favorates buy I did like the story line. The slang wasn't as modern and I had to use context clues to figure most of it out, but I did and it is a pretty nice book. I checked it out from the library just because I had heard it was controversial, but I found nothing inside to be controversial.

well how much more controversial can you get from that time period....its all about a kid who slowly goes crazy from thew death of his brother...he lets himself go by drinking and smoking all day everyday not to mention him getting hookers
The meaning of the book is Holden is the savior of innocense. The rye field repressents innocence and thats where the children play. The cliff repressents growing older/maturing but he feels people are "phony" He catches/saves the children from falling off the rye field therefore saving them from becoming the typical asshole corporate type

Yeah, it was controversial then, but put it in todays society and you just described a punk artist. Todays truly good music has passed us by, people are more concerned with image. They just want to be profesionall popular people, not musicians.
Hey C, stop by my website.

Meaning, symbolism, and et cetera in literature are personal and subjective; a statement that so boldly believes itself to be correct is not a good thing, in this context. B.) There's a whole fucking lot more to it than that, but you do get one of the basic points. CitR is one of my favorite books of all time. I read it in two days, would've read it in one sitting but shit came up. I also read it when I was 15, and still loved it. My chronological age and my mental age are vastly disparate . [/nonhumility] Oh yes, if I ever have a son, I want to name him "Holden."
